current position:

Senior advisor at the German Remote Sensing Data Center DFD of the German Aerospace Center DLR.

field of work:

Engineering of the ground segment for remote sensing satellites in its elements, ground station networks, processing and archiving facilities including the technical and information interface to the user. His special interest is the application of multi-mission ground segments and very high data transmission technologies for future missions with extreme ground resolution and data availability in near real time.

biography:

Dr. Reiniger received his diploma in communications engineering in 1970 from the Technical University of Munich and his doctor of engineering degree in 1996 from the Technical University of Stuttgart with a thesis on the design of ground stations for Earth observation satellites.

He joined the German Aerospace Center DLR in 1972 where he was responsible for telemetry and telecommand with the spacecrafts and engineering projects. He joined the German Remote Sensing Data Center DFD in 1982, where he served as the deputy director and head of the international Ground Segment until the end of 2006. He now acts as Senior Advisor for DFD.

Since his start at the DLR he has concentrated on ground segment technology. He and his team have been working on the design and operation of spacecraft-to-ground transmission, the design of data reception systems, the storage of raw satellite data and its processing to basic products, mostly in real-time.

During his time at DFD he has designed, implemented and operated various ground-stations and Processing- and Archiving facilities for national and European Earth observation projects (e.g. the D-PAF for ERS-1/2). He has participated in more than 50 national and international projects that were executed in Germany and abroad. During his activities, he was responsible for the implementation of the IKONOS Regional Operation Center in Europe, the design of ground segments elements for the TerraSAR-X mission and he designed the ground reception scheme for the planned TanDEM-X and EnMAP missions. He is presently the project manager of fire detection and monitoring satellite system.
