Electrodynamics

(ECTS: 3; SWS: 2)

Lecturers

Dr. Adrian Doicu

prerequisites   --
objectives   To understand the electromagnetic scattering aspect of radiative transfer. Further the student shall be able to prepare with the appropriate software look-up tables for the optical characteristics of clouds and aerosols. These are used by radiative transfer codes to model the radiance fields within the atmosphere.
contents   Maxwell equations (electrostatic, magneto static, electrodynamics), electromagnetic waves (wave equation, plane waves, observables and averages), electromagnetic potentials (electrostatic scalar potential, magneto static vector potential, electrodynamic potentials), electromagnetic fields and matter (electric polarization and displacement, magnetization and magnetic field, energy and momentum), electromagnetic scattering theory (fields characterization, extinction, scattering and absorption, polarization of the incident and scattered light, Mie theory)
literature   Lecture Notes
