Earth Observation Satellites
Gravity and Magnetic Field from Space
(ECTS: 3; SWS: 2)Lecturers
Dr. Johannes Bouman| prerequisites | Introduction to Earth System Sciences, Orbit Mechanics 1, Signal Processing, Electrodynamics
| contents | The lecture will give an introduction to potential field theory, to the principles of satellite gravimetry and magnetometry. The principles and goals of the satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE, GOCE, ØRSTED, SAC-C and SWARM are discussed, as well as applications of these satellite data in earth sciences. The students shall attend the labs that support the lectures and hand in written reports on the labs. | |

ENVISAT Toolboxes
(ECTS: 3; SWS: 2)Lecturers
Dr.-Ing. Karin Hedman| prerequisites | Earth System Science, Introduction to Remote Sensing
| contents | The lecture will give an introduction to the ENVISAT mission, where we will focus on the scientific mission and the instruments carried on board. The ENVISAT instruments and some of their applications within Earth System Science will be introduced. The lecture include tutorials on AATSR data, ASAR data and SCHIAMACHY data. Further the students shall do a project with ENVISAT data on a scientific topic. During this project the student shall also test the performance of some of the ENVISAT free for downloading toolboxes by using sample ENVISAT data. The results shall be presented in a report and discussed during oral presentations. | |
| objectives | to understand the principles of ENVISAT instruments and to be able to work with ENVISAT data | |
