ESPACE Student Doing Internship in USA
[published Dec. 11, 2007]

Mr. Kotsiaros working with the Mars Gravity Biosatellite at MIT

The ESPACE master student Stavros Kotsiaros had the opportunity to intern with the Mars Gravity Biosatellite project at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA for 8 weeks beginning 4th September and ending 26th October.

During this time Mr. Kotsiaros worked as Payload Experimental Test and Validation Engineer for the ground-based spacecraft simulation hardware.

His technical work involved assembly, integration, testing, validation and operation of a ground based experimental simulation system for the Mars Gravity Biosatellite.

"The Mars Gravity Biosatellite will carry a small population of mice to low Earth orbit aboard a spinning spacecraft creating "artificial gravity" equivalent to that on the Martian surface. The five-week mission will conduct the first in-depth study of how mammals adapt to a reduced-gravity environment. Groundbreaking data from this mission and its successors will be essential in determining future possibilities for human space exploration."
